The ole '95 with 108k miles is starting to refuse to start. When you turn the key it makes a noise like the solinoid but can't seem to crank. Try it a couple of times and it eventually crankes and starts. I cleaned the battery cables but that didn't help.
In my older car it would be the starter. In this one with the VATS I'm not too sure.
Opinions? Is it going to be a beer and cash weekend to start the new year?
When the Vats acts up you will hear nothing when trying to start. It sounds like you need a $350.00 starter my friend. Of coarse you need to do some diag first but I think in the end it will be a starter.
for my '85 it cost 34.99 with a lifetime warranty...
Well you guys have the typical chevy 5.7 starter. The LT1s have a special High Torque starter... check it out on parts direct... I don't know how much they want for the LT1 starter but local dealers around here wanted $350 for it.
I had mine repaired by a good alternator/starter repair shop for like $60. The later C4's do have a more exspensive high tourqe starter. Look into a rebuild/repair. That way you just stick it back in without the hassle of shimming up a new one. Plus you save cash!

yep (place funky working i agree emoticon here),have it freshened up.mainly just needs a solenoid.
loosen and retighten the batt cables at the batt, the starter and the ground first to make sure its not a bad connection before anything though.
Mine had a loose connection on the wire that activates the solenoid. I found it when I was putting the new really expensive high torque starter in. I now have a new starter anyway.
Let me give you a heads up... If the local Chevy dealer sells it to you and installs it... you get a lifetime warranty that includes towing so it may be worth it to you.
I got mine installed at a Buick dealer for $201.00 because I have a buddy who has a buddy that is a service advisor there. You may not get that kind of deal but for around $300-$350 would be the normal price I think.
I feel its worth the extra money to have it installed for 2 reasons
1) you don't have to crawl under the car and do it
2) You get the lifetime warranty.
