Went for a short drive a couple days ago...........clunking,knocking sounds occurred in engine compartment. I stopped a looked over the engine. Harmonic balancer is wobbling bad. Shut the car down a towed it home. A little inspection revealed no center bolt. I got a replacement bolt and the threads appear to be stripped inside. My car is a 95 LT1
What kind of a mess do I have on my hands? Arkvette
If the threads in the crank snout are damaged, or stripped, I am afraid you'll be looking at a new crank. Hopefully you'll be able to find a shop that could put in a helicoil while it's still in the car.
Looks like my threads are stripped. Rather than go with a helicoil and the necessary drilling for it in such a tight space I am cosidereing going to a metric thread. The standard thread is 7/16 X 20 ( .437" diameter, 20 threads per inch. A 12mm X 1 is .472" diameter and 25 threads per inch. The tap drill for 12mm X 1 is .434". The stripped thread hole is within a couple thousandths of the recommended 12mm X 1 tap drill size. I will have to drill or bore the hub but that is no problem. Other than ending up with a bastard bolt in the crank and hub are there any other problems I might incur? arkvette
So long as you're very careful I don't see any problems. Getting at it to drill and tap it straight might be an issue, be very careful and take your time.
I took delivery on my brand new 1969 stingray. It wasn't running very good. Call the dealership and had it towed back to them. 12 miles on the car. They call me and tell me the harmonic balncer is cracked. Bottom line, they had to replace the crankshaft.
my balancer and hub are not damaged, neither is the crank other than the stripped thread inside the snout. you must have damaged or cracked the crank snout. sorry to hear that. arkvette
