shift ****

anyone know hwo to get thos off? i jsut got a new one off of ebay and cannot get the old one off of my 85. i got the button off but then there looks liek a litel ring is holding the rest in. anyone ever do this? thanks

I'm not sure if you have an auto or manaul. On manual cars, you have to pry that ring out, then the **** threads off the shifter. Auto's might be the same, but I've never done an auto.

The auto also has a snap ring that you are going to have to take out. I did mine with two small screwdrivers. Then you just lift the **** off.

I picked up a snap ring plyer set at Sears and used the long nose attachment to remove the snap ring from my A4 shift ****.

Once the snap ring has been removed the know should just slide up off the shaft if an A4. You may need to tap on the underside of the **** if it resists.

Tried last weekend to replace mine, got the ring off and the thing STILL wouldnt move AT ALL. Next week I am taking a cutting wheel and going that route!
