Default Console / Shifter replacment question

I just ordered the complete console trim plate , with the ash tray door, shift indicator lens and needlefor my 87. Even though the power seat graphics wear off in time...I wanted to return her to stock. Before I get to the stupid question I was intending on embarrassing myself with by asking...let me say this...I know parts for Vettes are expensive.....some parts worse than others....but where does Ecklers and MID et all get off charging $55 for a stupid ash tray door????? I mean by comparison...the whole console trim plate is only $99.....I would expect the ash tray door to be like $30-40 tops.....what are they placing a surcharge for Lung Cancer medical expenses????? Then there is the clear shift indicator lens.....a little plastic nothing...$45.99
Yikes!!!! I have the wood dash kit but I am not thrilled with the way it looks so I am returning her to original.
Anyways.....My dumb question is this, the little double retainer clip which keeps the shifter **** in place.....is there a tool that I need to clip that off or can I use a pair of needle nose pliers???? It looks kind of tight in there ...not sure what kind of room I have to play with.....
I have this vision of springs flying up in the air .......parts all over the interior!!!!! Hopefully it will go smoothly!!! Any help..as always is greatly appreciated.

In all honesty the ashtray door should be included.

You need a small pair of straight tipped snap ring pliers. Sounds like you've gotten a good reaming on some of the parts. Have you checked with The Last Detail? They're more reasonable on some things than some of the other suppliers. Good luck, hopefully some with more experience on the earlier cars will check in re/ parts.

Oh yeah I agree thats what makes it even more unfair. I dont smoke
and I know there is the cup holder which goes in & over the ashtray
door while its open so I was tempted to just order the cup holder....but I don't drink in the Vette.....and It just doesnt look right. Besides I have the engine console plate which sticks over the ashtray door so it does serve some sort of purpose. !!!

Yeah...I'm still having trouble sitting!!!!
I bought the parts from Ecklers ....they were a few bucks cheaper than the rest of the shysters!!! Ill keep "the Last Detail " in mind for the next series.

I too soiled my shorts when I priced the ash tray door so I bought the new spec emblem and I'm going to sand the old door down and re-paint it semi-gloss black.

Yeah, it should be but it's not.
I'm replacing my plastic too, and this stuff is outrageously expensive.
