Any opinions on the Bosch part # SR8560X NIPPONDENSO 12V Offset Gear Reduction 11 Tooth 1.4 KW Clock Wise Rotation (Remanufactured) from RockAuto $222.79
It took me about 1/2 hour to do my '92, it helps if you have a lift. Just remember to disconnect the battery. Check clearences between the starter gear and flywheel. Also, I bought a new one from the Chevy dealer. Expensive but why gamble?
No problem. I did it last week on my '95. Two bolts hold it on, there are two bolts to hold the wires, and you might need to remove one more to loosen the harness to make it easier to get in and out. There were no shims, and nothing said about them in the book. There is a seal that goes between the starter and the flywheel housing. The seal on mine was not in good shape and I should get another one and replace it. I started a thread with the details, comments, and venting.
Tell the wife it will take 2 hours and bring a six pack. You will have about an hour to drink it when you are done.
My 88 is an auto and my first time took more than 2 hrs. Couldn't figured out where is the openning big enough to get the starter out until I pulled the trans. cooler lines apart to get the starter out . GM intended to have only stick shift corvette need starter replacement. .
Getting the Corvette high enough with ramps and 2x6's was hardest part of starter removal and install. I remember that heat shield and auto trans. lines were in the way. Tight spot, had to wiggle it out, short bolt hard to install, only cut two knuckles.
Do not tell anyone, but I bought a cheapo starter at Auto Zone. It has worked for a whole summer now. This work was done on a 94LT1.
the best way i found to lift my corvette is to put the tires on cinder blocks, perfect amount of room underneath on a creeper, I replaced my clutch that way and today to pull the starter for a noise check, I agree, that autozone is definitly the way to go I've always used them with no complaints in fact thats where I got my clutch, for a lot less money
