Guys, today I installed the dash cluster for my 85 after been under repairs and refurbishing. I sent it to "Dash cluster repairs " in Bloomington , Indiana and I'm more than satisfied with the good results. Mr. Gene Taber is the man in charge, good guy to deal with and very responsible individual. Just in case your cluster is dying or in such bad shape as mine, check it out.
How much did it cost you? I only have like 2 number segments that don't work in the oil pressure panel. Like the number 2 is missing one segment and in the word "LO" the L is missing the top half of the L. I wonder what could be done with that?

Thanks, I'll keep them on the back burner. So far my Cluster is ok, although the MPH numerals are dimming....the rest of the cluster is "normal". Is the dimming caused by dulling bulbs....or is it a more complex problem???

you can try removing the assembly and tearing it down and cleaning the rubber blocks and their respective mating surfaces on the center LCD. It is either that or you have a small crack or a big chip in the panel. If you do decide to try that while you are in there you may want to replaces the bulbs and go over the boards with a soldering iron, not saying you should resolder everything but the main problem with theese clusters is cold solder points from the constant viberations. All you need to do is touch the solder joints with a hot iron long enough for the solder to melt and then let go
Good luck!

just bulbs by the sounds of it although again if you go to those lengths i would pull it down and resolder the connections, replace ALL the bubs and pull the panels and clean the rubber connection blocks and mating surfaces while you are in there take away the chances of more problems anytime soon

Well, mine's was almost gone, I paid around $ 13.00 for shipping 2nd. day USPS and $600.00 for the entire refurbishing due to the fact that all three LDC's were bad and this is when things get worst. They charge $195.00 for refurbishing if there's no LCD's involved, best bet to contact Gene for advice that's what I did before sending it. There's a lot of offers at Ebay buy check them out first, just to find out you are dealing with the right people, do not take chances to buy and used one.
Later.

That's the first thing that I thought. I removed the cluster myself replaced the bulbs and nothing. If your car is off you are not suppose to see anything in the cluster if if does probably is a bad LCD.

OK, I tore the whole thing down and found only 2 bad bulbs which I had already knew. Not a single solder point looked bad and cleaned the rubber blocks and the board contacts. Nothing else seemd to be wrong. The panels look in great condition and are very dark when the car is off. Does any one have any other ideas?

Great articles on repairing the dash cluster thanks NITRONICK. Has anyone actually swapped the 882 bulbs with the 194 bulbs as suggested in the repair notes? I see no way to make this happen. The socket that the 882 has will never take a 194 no matter how creative you are. Can someone help me out with either where to get new sockets that will take the 194's? Also, I spent most of the day running around looking for these bulbs. I went to 5 auto parts stores and only located (1) 882 bulb and they wanted $11. Any other suggestions?
Yeah, those 882s are a little pricey! I think I paid $8+ at O'Reillys for just the bare halogen bulb, no socket.
There is an incandescent bulb made with the straight pins, but I cannot remember the number. I had to ask specifically for it, and it was behind the counter at one of the parts houses(O'Reilly, AutoZone, etc.).
YEah, they told me the 891 would fit the bill. But what they don't tell you is that it draws twice the amps which means it runs twice as hot and only has a service life of 200-300 hours vs, the 2000-3000 hrs of the 882's
