When my clutch is released and the transmission is in nuetral, there's a noticeable "gnashing" noise, and when the clutch is engaged the noise stops. This has occurred for some time now, without getting worse. Is this normal?

91z07, you have the "black tag" ZF, which is notorious for its "box of rocks" noise straight from the factory, due to its straight cut teeth. No worries.

Normal. My '95 has had this noise for years. I talked to a tech at Rockland Standard Gear he assured me it's a normal sound for a ZF S6-40 transmission. Some are louder than others in neutral but they all do it to some extent. Also, due to the fairly straight cut gears, 1st to 3rd gears are noisy (whine).

The straight cut gears account for gear whine when you start driving. The idle in neutral noise would be from the dual mass flywheel wearing out, or better said, the ability of the dual mass flywheel to absorb vibration from the engine. This vibration causes the gear rattle in the tranny which is not harmful, but sound like nuts rolling around in there.

I disagree. The noise in mine is definitly not the flywheel. It did it from new. I replaced the clutch a couple of years ago and checked the flywheel at that time. It's perfect. I know the "rocks in the can" sound you're referring to. We're not talking about that sound. The closest thing I can compare it to is the sound a supercharger makes.
