Default AFS vs OE Wheels?

Ok I know AFS and OE have been talked about to death on here but I still haven't found a thread comparing the two as far as quality and looks. I need a ZR1 wheel for my 94 LT1, probably silver, and need some more info to either get AFS or OE. AFS are about 700 on ebay unless you find one of those rare deals which I haven't seen lately. OE by that guy moore911 are about 400. I've never seen either of these two wheels in person and I know how pics can be deceiving. Can anyone compare these two?

I bought the 17x9.5 o.e wheels 515.00 with shipping and centers. Balanced out with minimal weight added and they look great. I've run the car down the track with the new wheels and no problems. I bought the black grandsport style wheels on my white 93 with a red interior.

I have the 17X9.5 AFS Crome ZR1 wheels all around and really like the quality. They were purchased by the last owner in 2001 and still look great. I have his reciept and he really overpaid. $1500 for the set of 4 with center caps and crome lugs and locks and shipping.

I have the AFS ZR-1's in Grand Sport black. Very nice wheels. Got them for $625 including shipping and center caps. AFS's shipping is cheaper, but both are good quality wheels.

My AFS GS rims are very poor quality, less than 2 years and the black powdercoat is coming off them to differing degrees, and I have washed them with nothing other than soap and water.

AFS also adds a ton of wheelweights to their rims.

I have the polished alum set, but I have noticed a lot of weight( tape style ) on the inside of the rims. No problems with the ride, but I have to make sure the weights don't come off.

They are both of about equal quality. The OE wheel has some subtle differences in that the ones I've seen have a 1" lip around the outside of the rim to widen it to the desired 11" width. AFS has the deep inset lug pattern... but it is different from that of the ZR1 or stock GS. As for quality and strength, they are both pretty comparable. You can also check with Detroit replicas too. There's are the most accurate representation I've seen to date... but be prepared to fork out some $$$

I have OE.... timing and pricing was right.

There was a thread in the C5 forum where a member broke two of his replica Z06 wheels. I don't recall who made them. Other than that, I haven't heard of problems with either.

AFS are fine, as long as you don't do any serious autocrossing or track racing. Not as structurally sound as OE.

Glad to hear that even though I'll still be using sawblades for autocrossing. I love my OE ZO6 wheels and they too balanced with minimal weight using Pirelli (rear) and Yokohama tires. They were about $535 w/ shipping and insurance. They're barely heavier than my blades which is acceptable for street. I couldn't have been more pleased with them.

I dunno if the OE wheels are lighter, but they are damn light and I'm very happy with mine (the looks atleast... damn tireshop botched the balancing of them)

The AFS wheels are a little heavier (maybe 5lbs?) than the OE which can dramaticly increase your suspended weight . Also the AFS wheels are a cast aluminum compared to the spun aluminum (alloy) stock wheels on my '91 .
The OE wheel is better "quality" than the AFS Grand Sport copies I put on my '91 , the black GS wheels look so much better on a red car though .
I will say that the AFS wheels balanced out perfect with minimal amount of weight , no more than 1.25oz per wheel .

Just got my OE black gs wheels in. They look great to me. I can't wait to get them on. Original style thin polished lip. I went with the oe cuz I heard that the 17x11 have a 1 inch lip in the back to widen them giving them more of a deeper look in the back and thats what I was wanting. I was worried that they would send me those ugly fat polished lip ones, but I was relieved when I opened them they were exactly what I was wanting. I called them direct 1-866-273-3651 and they were like 480 bucks shipped to my door with centers and lugs. You can't beat that. That was the 17x9.5/17x11 combo too. Now I just hope my 315/35s come in tomorrow dam it..lol

p.s. Ohh..did I say that I traded a motorcycle I picked up wrecked and rebuilt for my 89 69,000 mile C4. Now with the rims included I have a grand total of 1900.00 invested in this car. Not bad for a car with cold a/c just to knock about in-

I have a set of AFS Black Grand Sport wheels for my race tires. They are an excellent value for the price. If you find them on E-Bay from AFS you can get them in the 5-600's range. In weight they are identical or even slightly less than the stock rims.

I would imagine in the silver or chrome they are identical to ZR-1 O.E. rims in appearance. However the AFS Black Grand Sport wheels slightly differ in appearance from that of the factory wheels. They have a much larger silver lip compared to the factory. Unless you happen to have a Grand Sport most would not notice this to begin with, but as I do I notice the difference!
