Default service engine soon light

Has anyone done this and had a bad experience. It's a 91 with an L98.

Put in a Hypertech Thermo Master Power Chip, a BPP Vortex Rammer Cold Air System With Clear Cover, and a ACDelco 160º Thermostat. Prior had stock air system and not sure of the thermostat.

Temp was cut in half. Subject light has been coming on intermittently for about a month. Car runs as strong as ever.

Also prior to the changes my fan very seldom came on. Now after about 30 minutes of routine driving ti comes on. On initial startup it fires right up. Again after 30 minutes of driving and shutdown she doesn't turnover as quick. Starter perhaps?

Wish I could help. If you need anything from the service manuals let me know, I have the books for the 91's

read the FAQ http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=956100...

then go out and pull the code from your vette...

come back here and post the code, then we can help...

As for the fans, the stock temp for the fans coming on is above 220. You probably never hit that, hence, they rarely came on. Hypertech lowers what temp they come on... so now they come on often.

Is this out of the 160k mile car? I thought it was running smooth... anyway... if you take your car to the local PepBoys or AutoZone, they should be able to pull the codes for you. DO NOT take their recommendations on what is wrong. Take the slip of paper they give you to the local library and ask for the ALLDATA manual and program if they have it on computer. This will give you the *exact* readout that you'd see at a GM dealer. After you fix that problem it would be very wise to invest in the GM shop manuals and any other reading materials that will assist you.

Default When the SES light goes on.....

This is a signal that the computer is reading a sensor that is out of normal. First you need to read the code the computer is throwing. If you don't have a code reader either go to an AutoZone and they will pull it free for you or look for a post here that shows you how to ground out two pins and bring up the codes on your dash.

Factory shop manuals are a must. Wouldn't own a car without them. They are a good investment, will save you lots of money and hours of frustration.

A 160 degree thermo is too cold. The car will run cooler but it has nothing to do with the thermostat.
A 160 lenghtens the warm up time and a cold engine wears more than a warm engine. The engine runs in a closed loop at anything less than 168 degrees. That is it runs at a richer setting same as a cold start.

A 180 is as cold as you should go.
The hyper chip controls the fan off and on setting, the fans come on earlier. Thats why your car runs cooler.

For a hot start press the throttle about half way down and see if that helps for a faster start. If it does you could have a leaking or dirty injector.
