I agree with WAMR Texas, 5K on synthetic unless you've really been driving it HARD!!

These oil change threads are great...,

Me too. Did the 3 month/3000 mile thing for 30 years. Switched my cars to mobil 1 last year and now doing twice a year or 5-6k miles. If the oil doesn't look worse every time I change it I'll continue that schedule. So far it seems fine. I drive 30 miles highway one way 5 or more times per week.

Although you're probably right... it is excessive, I was under the impression that oil sitting all winter can also collect contaminants. It's probably just my OCD .

Hey rocco16, if I give you the oil from after winter storage, it would have zero miles on it!!! You would be good for 5,000 miles

Twice a year, once before winter, once after (because condensation will build up over the winter, that makes it bad oil).

I just purchased a 92 coupe in October and I'm gettting ready to do an oil change this spring (previous owner did one befor sale). Has anyone tried the purple synthetic or should I just stick with Mobil 1?

I end up changing mine every 3000 miles or 3 months. Whichever comes first. It always is the 3 months rule. Since it is relatively inexpensive to do, it gives me a chance to look around the engine and do an inspection at that time also.

If the previous owner did a Mobil 1 oil change right when you bought it and you haven't put many miles on it since, I wouldn't bother w/another oil change now, I'd wait for 5K to go by.

Personally, I'd stay with the Mobil 1 on the good possibility that it has been the oil used for the past 13 years, and it is what was engineered for the car. And consider that if it has been good enough for that long, is the purple stuff really much better???
