WTB 87+ Roller Block
I'm planning my first engine build, and looking for a bargain on a serviceable '87+ Gen 1 roller block core. These have the 1 piece rear main seal, but mount the old style, non-Vortec heads.
Must be free of cracks/welds/catastrophic damage (magnafluxed please); light surface rust at most. 4 bolt mains preferred, but not really a deal-breaker. Previous re-boring OK, but no more than .030 over as it sits. Happy to pay more if the block is already cleaned up, reconditioned, etc.
Willing to travel to pick up, within reason. I'm located in Muskegon, MI. Any leads are much appreciated!

you do want at least the short block. Lots of new parts in the roller that older blocks don't have.. like the spider thingy to hold the lifters on/in and I think a thingy( cam button?) under the timming cover to keep the cam from walking. Vortec heads didn't start till 96 but not sure about the bolt pattern of 8 versus 12 holes. wrecking yard is a good cheap place to find one, but buying one from someone on here may keep heart aches away.

The block is a different story, because it's harder to inspect. Could be in any condition coming from a yard, and I wouldn't know til I tore it down (and had it mag checked). That's why, as you also mentioned, I'm looking on here for the bare block, because I want to know I'm starting with a good foundation.
That being said, I'll have to turn down the above offer for $600. Already reman'd short blocks are $685 on eBay--and I want to save money, gain experience, and build it myself from the ground up. I also don't want to drop gobs of cash at a time, because I only have limited time on weekends to work on it anyhow. This will be a "slow-and-steady" endeavor...I'm starting now finding a block, so I won't have to rush to complete the project before next summer, and driving season!
Also, thinking about building a 383 "while I'm at it," so bonus if it's already appropriately clearanced.

I have have a four bolt main roller block. I have it on Craig's list for $75.00. It is standard bore. It was a good running engine when I pulled it. I was going to build a 383 but never did. I can send you some pics if interested.
