Default Steamed Up Windshield...

1990, L98 Coupe

My windshield becomes steamed up when the car is in use, I guess that this is related to a bad heater core. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to approach the task of replacing the heater core. I checked past post, but was curious to whether anybody had found any new methods.

Is it true that a thermostat that is stuck open can cause the heater core to go bad very quickly? I just recently had to replace my t-stat which was stuck open, during this period before the replacement of it I noticed that the windshield would become steamed up.

Thanks for the help.

Matt

Thats what I was afraid of, and so this does sound like it is the heater core causing my windshield to fog up, because I have been yet to feel any coolant on my carpet.

Thanks Matt

When the heater core goes, they almost always dump coolant on your mats. If you're not seeing that, the heater core is probably not your problem. Before tearing your car apart to change the core, do the easy thing first and change the thermostat.

In a perfect world one thing would not lead to another. However with the cooling system on any car it does. If the car has any age on it and it loses pressure in the cooling system from say a rad. or hose or heater core or bad pressure cap and you fix it. Then you build pressure again and the next weakest link in the chain shows it's ugly head. So be prepared if one thing leads to another. And count your blessings if it does not happen.

you would be smelling coolant and you would be geting coolant smear on your windshield. are you getting warm air coming out from your defroster vents?

I have recently replaced my thermostat (85 500 horse), and I get very toasty in my car when I turn the heat on, also I honestly don't recall any smell of anti-freeze in the car. I have just noticed this whole fogged up winsheild thing for awhile, and while I was getting my car inspected Thursday the guy mentioned the steam on the inside of the windshield and said that my heater core was bad.

Thanks Matt

This might be one of those crazy fixes, but it can't hurt to try. You live in a very humid climate. Windshields can easily fog from a great deal of humidity. As soon as you get in your car and start it, put on your A/c on the coldest temperature setting. See if that fixes your problem.
It's worth a shot.

The coolant may not be leaking enough to show on the carpet yet. Try pulling down the hush panel under the dash on the passenger's side. There is foam insulation on the top of the panel. Is it damp near the firewall?

BTW, when my core started to go, the fog only came out when the cabin was calling for heat. Try moving your temp setting up and down and check the response on the windshield.
