85 ignition lock replacement shortcut?
i put the wheels on the vette, put it on the ground (after 3 years), and was ready to take it for a test run when the ignition lock jammed. it moved to the crank position but would not turn off. i torqued it untill the chrome turn assist broke, leaving the ignition stuck in the run position. luckily i was finally able to pull out the key; although, i had to disconnect the battery to stop the motor.
i looked in the chilton's and it has a rather involved proceedure to pull the lock. does anyone know a shortcut? i know car thieves screw in a dent puller and yank the damn thing.
Nope. Gotta pull the column apart. There is a bolt inside securing it.
You will, of course, need a new lock cylinder. I paid like $12.50 at O'Reilly Auto. They can sometimes be rebuilt, but it is cheaper to just get a new one.
You will also need the "turtle". A little plastic piece that WILL break. It will be around $8, and you will have to go to your local Chevrolet parts department.

nick,
yeah, i've got a new cylinder lock coming and it's black. i'm so excited.
can you tell me specifically where the turtle is located and what it is attached to? i'll look at the brilliant diagram in the chiltons. also, can you give me some idea what the part maybe called in gm lingo?
It is a round plastic piece that clips on. The spring for the telescope function rests on it. No use trying to save it, as it gets brittle with age, and will break as soon as you try to pry it off.
I thought it looked more like a flower, but I guess the unofficial nomenclature is "turtle"
I mentioned Corvette, steering column and turtle, and the Parts counter guy knew exactly what I was talking about. I will try and find the receipt and get you the GM number.
There is a few bolts to cinch down if your tilt is kinda loose. I had a link to a rebuilding story, but seem to have lost it.
