I am thinking of powder coating my alternator but then I saw some in Summit that are pretty inexpensive. Problem is they only have 100-120amp Alts. What ampage is a stock alternator?
If you do powder coat your alternator you want to be very careful on the internal connections. Anywhere that the internals of the alternator are supposed to ground to the chasis you'll want to remove the powder coat. Likewise you'll want to remove the powder coat from any place where the alternator is supposed to touch the accessory bracket. These are all grounds and if they are not solid you'll burn up your alternator in no time.
Then you've just put a lot of work in powder coating it down the toilet.
Mine was rated 105 OEM when I went bought one last week. I swear, every F%^ing accessory bolted to this motor is a piece of crap. Until I go aftermarket with practically everything, this thing is gonna keep harassing me.. My new master cyl is going out, it's been 2 months... I hate GM.
For whatever reason GM decided, the amperage that were in the alternators vastly differed depending on the year of the Vette. For example, in 1985, the alternator put out 140 amps, while the next few years it dropped to about 100-120.
If you want to powdercoat your alternator, I suggest you completely remove the "guts" prior to doing so. If you don't, your alternator will either not work or will fry quickly after installation. If you want a nice looking shiny reliable and powerful alternator, Powermaster makes a beautiful one, but the cost is rather high. You get what you pay for.
Just bought a AC Delco for my 93 Vette, 124 Amps. Had a 108 case in the Vette. The guy showed me I had the wrong one. Price was the same, so I bought the correct one for my year. I have electronic air, seats, AC . I think the cars electrical needs determined some alternator requirements. Look at Police Cars, some use very high alterantor's, as they are needed for all the bells and whisltes.
