Will the ZZ4 bolt right up to my 89 vette. I will be adding a super ram to it also. How does this effect the computer and what size injectors are needed. does the feul pump need change too. well I guess what I am asking is if I chose the ZZ4 what other changes are needed?

1) yes
2)computer will be fine w/22 or 24#
3)only if pump is weak will changing be required
4)none really
There are quite a few vendors selling quality crate motors. ZZ-4 is a great choice. New, quality components, and a warrantee. With a superram and some bolt ons I was running 12.80 @110 with great drivability.
For a few dollars more, well, OK maybe more than a few, check out the ZZ383. It's all new with a warranty just like the ZZ4. A little tuning probably required to optimize the retrofit, but anyone with a scan tool and chip burner should be able to get you there, then a run on the chassis dyno with a WB02 for WOT A/F and you're all set.
I'm going with one in my 85SS unless something better comes along before I get around to it.
will any tuning be needed for the ZZ4 engine or is it basically a bolt in and run?????
It probably would not hurt to put a scan tool on it just to see if you are rich or lean anywhere in the fuel curve, any tweaking would probably be minimal and it should run OK as is.
Apple chevrolet in Reading pa was selling them well below list a few years ago. I was able to find my best deal and have my local parts guy at local dealership match it and fudge the tax. Scoggins Dickie also had good prices. I believe they are out of texas. If you buy, try to buy local just in case you have a problem. GM warrantee will apply nationwide though. Long story short is any chevy crate engine was available from any gm dealer(unless this has changed) Parts deptartments are sometimes hungry for business. Pays to call around. Pace performance in ohio also has good prices.
Yes! over time I added slp runners, ported plenum and ported base manifold. I did this as the budget allowed. I eventually wound up using a superram with a 58 mm throttle body. The 12.80 et I quoted was at Island dragway with the 1st set up(no superram). It was very reliable, consistant and great on fuel. I miss those days!
Pete, first I want to thank you for your help. As you miss those days I can't wait. So I will be going with the ZZ4 crate and a superram setup. what do you think I can pull with it.
Mid 12's or so is about all it will do. Not that it is a shabby et. Nos will take it to mid 11's, but that is a different thread! The zz-4 is a bit old school but when I did it, it was newer stuff. The reason I miss it is it made enough power to have fun and not break things. Now it seems like every time I run it hard now, I break something. You should run a good exhaust too.
using the ZZ383 engine will require using the tuned port vortec intake manifold, that I think only Scoggin Dickey offers. Neither the ZZ4 nor the ZZ 383 are emissions legal. The heads do not have egr ports, but they may still pass your local emissions tests if you have all the emissions hardware on, it is a gamble. The egr system won't work with these engines
