the valve that opens and allows hot water to flow to the heater core is leaking. the entire hardline part is $80 at eckler's. is it possible/safe/recommeded to just connect the hoses with a coupler prior to them mating up with the hardlines that leads to the valve and into the heater core?
I don't need the heat in Florida and this would just be a temporary fix until i bought the part and had the time to replace the hardlines/valve.
No prob. A similar operation can be used to bypass a leaking heater core, to drive the car until a convenient repair time comes up. By the way, my car has had the heater control valve eliminated and removed from the car for 18 years, now. After a trial period, you may find that you don't even need it.
We live in Florida and its hot a hell down here. I have never in(18 months) used the heater. For Florida cars, a leaking heater core is not a problem to by-pass. Do it.
I guess I am just too much of a die hard, but I run my vert top down all winter long in Florida - but I do cheat - I have the heater running on the cold days. I think I have to move further south!
Please post pics on how its done, I have the dreaded leaking heater core in my car and I was also thinking of bypassing it. I can't find how in the shop manual.
rudy...great sig...when i was shopping i had a choice of 2 vettes a white 91 and the silver 85....the 85 looked just like dads, so much so that my mom broke down when she saw it.
anyway....here is a photo of the hoses that just need to be connected
You can buy a plastic 5/8" to 3/4" hose adaptor at most parts stores. They are about $5.00. Just connect the inlet hose to the outlet hose. No manual needed for THAT.
THERES the info i was looking for. parts store, here i come!!
That adapter is to bypass the heater. The heater control valve should have the same size hose at both ends. All that takes is a straight piece of pipe.

RACE ON!!!
Speaking of which, where is that valve? I've never seen it Is it inside the dash or what? My climate control stopped working and until I can get to it I want to shut the heater off cause it's stuck on

A heater, water control, valve was only used in 1984-1987 cars. You didn't mention your year, so.... You can go under the dash and manually close the air diverter valve.

That makes a lot more sense. I just looked under there and saw nothing but two hoses I thought I bungled something up when i put the new motor in, but I guess it is the climate crap after all.. Eh, oh well time to go crack that sucker open.
