I can't seem to find my transmisson problem in any book. When I shift from Park or Neutral to Drive it shifts very hard. There is a slight delay then it hits. It isn't as bad from Park or Neutral to Reverse but still not quite as smooth as it should be. Are there any suggestions?
You should also consider worn out u-joints on the drive-shaft and half-shafts. What may be happening is as you put the car into gear, it thumps because the u-joints have slack in them. My car behaves similarly, and I thing I need to replace the u-joints soon.

Bingo! My 89 did the exact same thing; replace them all with Spicer units yesterday. Big difference.
Starting in 1987, they started to use a forward accumulator, which made the neutral to drive smoother. If you have the right year, (with forward accumualtion), and it still engages hard, then the forward accumulator is most likely the problem. The 1-2 accumulator has nothing to do with it. If you have any questions on this let me know?
