I am not sure what a D44HD is, but I am willing to bet that it is the one for the Viper.

so the vette's only came with 2 rears a 36 and 44. also i read somewhere that to install 4:11's in the 44 you have to machine the case alittle??? for a perfect fit

I think that is right... for the 4.11s to fit right, the case has to be relieved a bit.

I know the Viper uses a variation on the D44, but it isn't the same.

I got my 4.11's from Tom's Diffs. and they installed in my D44 no problem..No machine work required..

You should have the dana 44D its the same as the viper. At least thats what my 1996 has got. I have been to a couple of shops that told me same thing. The dana 44D is bigger than the regular dana 44.

the Dana 44 in the Viper is not the same as the D44 in the Vette.

The design of the bearing carrier is so totally different, as is the casing.

The D44 is an 8.5" ring gear. That is the common thread between the two diffs.

The D44 in C4's & Vipers are actually a heavy-duty version with a thicker pinion shaft. I've heard it called a "Super44"...don't know if that's the same as a "D44HD"...you'd have to check with U.S. Gear.

You can either buy a standard 4.11 R&P set and a 4-series carrier...or a 4.11 "thick gear" R&P, which uses the 3-series carrier you already have. Neither option requires machining of the case.

The 4.11 "thick" gear that Tom's Diffs sells is actually a U.S. Gear product.

I am running one as well, and love it. No noise.
