I was thinking instead of spending alot of $$$ on a high flow tpi system,I could put a LT1 intake on it instead.I know it can be done, http://www.lt1intake.com/ but a guy I know said if I do this I will lose my low end touque.Has anyone done this and/or is it true?
There have been a lot of discussions on the forum about the LT1 conversions. You will find mroe answers there and good info.
To cap it all up quickly though :
Loss of low-end under 4K torque = YES
Noticeable = YES YES
Pickup of upper 4K+ HP and better pull at higher speeds = YES
Noticeable = YES YES
PITA level of conversion/fittment (Scale of 1-10) = 8
Possible coolant/intake leaks = HIGH
Emissions Legal = NO
Can use stock Distributor = NO, Needs small Camaro type.
Can you use stock Waterneck = NO, Needs special remote thermostat housing and plumping to route water to back of modified intake.
COOLNESS FACTOR = YES YES, very sweet to see an LT1 intake on an older L98 engine.
I'veb been thinking about this myself. All that low end business is OK for racing somsone from a light. Up a steep hill. With super hot, dry, new asphault. That's about it.
Think about it. TQ is the power. HP is the rate at which that TQ is delivered (basically). SO what good is having 350tq if you have to wait a day for it to come in? (the L98 is a tow truck motor, measely 235hp)
I'd do it today if I had more time, and it wasn't so hockey.. I'm not a big fan of shimming distributors at some weird angle with home depot washers, if you know what i mean...
Torque motors are great for guys (like myself) that want to keep tall gearing and not have to spend the $$ for the high winding motor, and still move....
If I had 4.11's in this and a manual, then yes, I'd consider an LT1 changeover, big cam, etc. Depends on what you want the car to do.
They both have their pro's and cons. I'll take one of each, please!
Buying parts that fit is like doing crossword puzzles with the answers already there. Or watching a movie if you've already seen the ending. Dare to be different! I havent noticed any lack of low end torque in the lt1 engines. And my sisters lt4 pulls surprisingly strong at 1000 rpms. I have an lt4 intake at the machine shop now getting welded up to fit my vortec motor. I had him run an extra bead around the area that will be drilled for the water outlets. This guy's specialty is cylinder heads and I am confident he can weld a manifold up and mill it back to square.
