if it backfires through the intake..it is lean or you have timing or spark plug wire issues.
if it backfires through the exhaust you have a rich issue, timing problem or the plug wires are on incorrectly. if you have an exhaust leak it will also cause a back fire or popping on decel. just what i can think of quickly.
Do you have any exhaust leaks? Sometimes that will cause it on decel.Should be able to hear it if it leaks have someone rev it and let off while you check by ear both sides.
Yes only through the exhaust on decel. So plugs or timing? I wonder then were do I start?
Have you checked to see if the PCM is throwing any error codes? This would be the first place to start. The AF ratio is calculated from many components such as O2 sensors, TPS, MAP, MAF, etc. during closed loop operation. One or more faulty or slow reacting sensors could lead to rich AF ratio upon deceleration, causing detonation of this mixture in your hot exhaust..

Looking for an exhaust leak would be where I start. Easy things first!
Well you installed headers now the rumble is out of the bag.
If you listen close the car always did the rumble backfire noise but with the headers it is more noticable.
The LS1 is even worse then the Lt1.
The standard is check the fuel presure should be at 43.5 lbs
and go from their if you want to chase something.
