auto trans loafs into 3rd. TV cable adjust?
The 700r4 in my '85 with 100K miles operates well except it wants to shift 1-2 and then almost immediately 2-3 before I cross the intersection. I can drive it aggessively and it shifts much later. Is this normal? I adjusted the TV cable according to the book. The cable appears to be all the way back when I do that adjustment. Can I adjust it forward manually to delay the early shifts? Or is that going to goof things up?

You can tweak it slightly forward but you should not move it many clicks off of the proper set point as that will effect line pressure.
Moving the TV cable head toward the TB a little will raise and soften the part throttle ****s.

better, sort of
I moved the cable housing toward the TB about 3/16". The shift is softer but it still goes into 3rd at 20 MPH at low throttle. Maybe this much of an early shift at low speed is normal for this car? Once it's in 3rd, just a little nudge on the trhottle will downshift it back to 2nd.

Any change in shift points by moving the TV adjustment is more coincidental than causal. The TV cable needs to be at spec or VERY close. Readjust the cable where it belongs before you're buying a transmission.

Do this with the engine off.
The TV cable is on the same cable bracket as the throttle cable and cruise cable. Inline to the TV cable, you will find a D shaped bracket, the inside of which compresses. I recommend a large openended wrench.
Compress the inside, pulling the cable BACK to the firewall, all the way... then, grab the throttle lever and twist it all the way OPEN. This will set the TV cable.
This applies to 1985-1991. When they added ASR, all bets were off.

OK I set it back per the manual.
Since there was not a significant improvement, and there was a danger besides, the original specified adjustment has been restored.
Is the Transgo kit something worth considering for a trans like this at 100K miles? Or am I just asking for trouble?
