Default what cam should I use?

I have a 1996 auto LT1. 80k. stock rear 2.59s stock TC
I have or will install with this cam the following:

Hedman ceramic coated LTs..by me
k an n open air lid
mufflers elims
not cats
under drive pullies
gm 1.6 rrs
ls1 stock valve springs
bbk 52 mm tb
meizere water pump
cloyles true double chain

I acctually think a cam that gets power between 3-5 would be best for me as I have a dana 36 and dont wanna risk too much tq to the rear upon take off... I was looking at hot cam but want more agressive
I'd acctually like a choppy Idle hehe but not a must.

what do you think would be the best cam for me and my set up? and why?

thanks alot your friend
Sean

Are these stock heads? Cams are generally mated to the head flow.

I opted for the gm 845 cam. Ive bought it but havent installed it yet. It is used quite often in heavier vehicles such as impalas because of its torque output. it has been favorable over the hotcam due to the lower rpm power output and as I mentioned, torque. With your automatic transmission and gear ratio it should do quite well. Specs are 214/218 @.050 488/509 lift w/ 1.5rr 112 deg. As you can see the numbers are not far from the hotcam. Slightly less duration and more lift. I dont recall the lift with 1.6 rockers but it exceeds the hotcam by a signifigant amount. Probably does not require additional tuning. Also, it is a true "drop in" camshaft. One drawback is that if you go with 1.6 rockers your lift will exceed the limits of the lt4 springs. Everyone I have talked with about this cam has fallen in love with it, saying they increased power and torque throughout the range with no sacrifice in low end or drivability. Also say it has a nice sound. If I get mine in next week as I plan I will sure let you know. You can find a lot of info on the yahoo search. Ive also heard good things about the comp cams 501.

I dont know the specs on an 846, but with stock heads and 2:59/ auto trans, I wouldnt go any larger than the 845. You will enjoy driving so much more if you dont overcam your setup.

Your rear end gear ratio is another one of the concerns in camshaft selection. Too much cam and the car will feel like a dog with 2.59s.

With 2.59s, how often will the engine actually see 3000/5000 RPMS?? Rarely I'll bet.

You need to shoot for a short duration, high lift, wide LSA and fast ramp cam to keep the car feeling peppy.

Just my thoughts.

Put your 1.6 rollers in and change out the rear end gears, you will get more from that than just slapping in a cam. Just my two cents

Personally I'd call Competition or any other brand name cam co. that had EFI grinds and ask them what they recommend. If you are honest and tell them everything about your car with no : they will sell you the perfect cam for the car.

I have pretty close to the same setup except I have 3.54 gears and I am currently installing a new comp cam.

Thunder racing has them on sale right now for cheap and you can get them custom ground.

Mine is the 5th down. I had it ground to 114 so it would idle a little better.

The 846 is too big for an auto with 2.59 gears and a stock converter. The specs are 222/230 duration @ .050" and .543/.563 lift with 1.6 rockers. I run this cam in my LT4 with 4.10 gears. When I dyno in a month or so, I expect to see peak power around 6400rpm

That is good advice. This is what I did. Just call them and tell them what you have or what else you are getting and make sure you have someone who knows there stuff. Feel them out with a few questions. They are there to help and do this every day for a living.
