At 9.5, you could run either. At 10.5ish, You would need to run 92, but if you could check for knock, then maybe you could find out whether 89 works. Not everybody is going to get knock with 89 on a 10.5, but some will. Depends on your engine.
It all comes down to whether you get knock with that octane level. You want to use the lowest octane you can, that doesnt allow knock.
