okay i posted about 4:11 gears for my car and everyone said do the gears. now i find out that 4:11's will not work well with the L98 motors?? i have 3:45's now. nitto 315's. most of the people that have 4:11's have 92-96 motors. so????????? all i have are bolt on mods.
Hey 6spd I'm no expert so take it for what it's worth. I loved the pull my 4.11's had in my old Chevelle but I would wind it out to 6500 rpm's . I have a 91 A4 and I figure the TPI makes it a torque monster. I don't think it pulls on the top end enough to use 4.11's. I also think that with the torque I do have that I will blow the tires away with that much gear. Not sure how it the application changes with a 6spd vs. A4.

Sez who? Did they give any reasons? They may be too low for the strip. What do you want the car to do? With the 4.11s you can actually use 6th gear. If you have been paying attention to recent posts, you would know that 4.11s on the highway produce the same revs as an auto with 3.07s.
This is an issue of semantics... work vs function.
They will "work", but will you enjoy them?
think of it this way, the L98 runs out of revs at about 5000 RPM, the 4.11s will rub up against that quickly. Causing many shifts...
To put it into perspective, the LT1 came standard with 3.45 (and some were equipped with 3.54 as an option), and the L98 came standard with a 3.07 and 3.33 as optional.
Consider that the rear gear is also designed to keep the engine in it's sweet spot, too much gear could be bad.
You may want to consider 3.54s or 3.73s as alternatives.
But if you go around town and see little/no track time (like me), than 4.11's are great. I have them in my TPI and my dad has 4.10's in his 5-speed, 302SBF cobra kit car.
They may hurt track times, but more than make up for it around town.
my car came stock with 3:45 gears i checked the code in the glove box. i don't mind shifting more or faster i just want to make sure it will be worth it.
I have 3.73s in my 88 4+3, and like 'em, but I'm still looking for some more hp above 4800 rpm, a cam is next on my list...
Your first gear performance will be similar to mine, only slightly deeper, easy to launch 1-2 shift comes quickly.
2.68(1st 6 speed) * 4.11 = 11.0
as compared to
2.88(1st 4+3) * 3.73 = 10.74
0-30 should rock, if you can hook without breaking.
On the track you can always shift 1->2->3->5, which would give you
an effective 3.08 ratio throught the traps. I wouldn't expect any real improvement over the 3.45s though.
