I've had this concept brewing in my mind for a while.....

Car: Dana 44 stock rearend w/3.45.

I should have enough power to trap @ ~125mph at the track;
with 3.45 gears the car would trap at ~5900rpm in 4th
with 4.09's/4.11's would be ~7000rpm in 4th (but my motor won't do that) or 5200 rpm in 5th (seems way to low for a trap)
with 4.56's I could trap at 6000rpm in 5th

I'm thinking that the higher gears such as the 4.56's will let me really get out of the hole AND allow me to trap at the appropriate rpm for 1/4 mile.
I know that it's not a good idea to trap in overdrive, and that's the thing that perturbs me. My other concern is that another shift will cost precious time.

My engine is designed for max power on top, and doesn't have much power down low (below 2000 rpm). I will still cruise the car, and at 40mph I have to be in 3rd. The 4.56 gears would allow me to at least cruise around in 4th.

Realistly, the car should top out at ~200 mph with the nitrous. Again the motor would be at the appropriate rpm (6200) for speed (200mph). Rather than ~4700rpm w/3.45's or 5700 w/~4.10's

As for freeway driving (65mph);
3.45's = 1500 rpm
4.10's = 1700rpm
4.56's = 2000rpm

Thanks for your input!

I like the whole concept. I agree on the desirability of using 5th for the 1/4. A lot would depend on the amount and speeds of your highway driving. And of course, there is the concern of over revving it at 200 mph.

RACE ON!!!

How about a 3.90 gear.....it'll lower the rpm at the traps in 4th.

It isn't a needed daily driver, but I will probably use it for that for fun. As long as it gets 15mpg it will be fine. 3.90's will be at 6700rpm at 125mph in 4th. My motor is stout, but I wasn't planning on pushing it past 6500. I was planning on shifting at ~6500rpm. This car needs to go 200mph if only once, and for a only a second. Actually 4.56's put the engine at 6500 at 209mph, and I'll need to tap the nitrous to get it to that speed. I thought 4.56's seemed tall as well, but the more i think about it really seems lika realistic choice over the 4.09's/3.90's, which seem to trap in no man's land. It's possible that the car could trap slightly higher than this, but I'm trying to engineer this as much as possible.
