Default headlight adjustment????help please

well after a month, finally tracked down a good motor for my headlight, after my buddy at the dealership tried to replace the bushings for me and took the whole motor apart.... and couldn't get it back together....

Anyway, I got it all hooked back up and installed, but in the closed position, the light isn't sitting flush with the hood like it did before. The gaps are even all the way around, it's just not sitting level, the oustide edge is about a 1/4 inch or so lower than the hood. I see the bumpstop adjustment....but that adjusting didn't seem to be enough, it only adjusted the top and bottom edge, but what about the side to side edges?....are there any other adjustments? or other things to look for?

Thanks.

On my '88 there is a screw on either side near the back and two bolts at the front corners.

These can be used to adjust the light housing to the frame.

I don't know how GM says to adjust them, but here's what I did.

On the 86 there are four bolts with 10 mm heads that are used to adjust the flat headlight cover (if that's what't your referring to). It's the cover you see when the lights are in the down "OFF" position.,

You need to raise the hood. The pull the headlight switch to "ON", but push it to 'PARK" (parking light setting) when the lights are half open. This will give you access to the four screws that hold the headlight hood in place. Remove the four screws that hold the headlight hood (this is the one you see when the lights are "ON") in place to gain access to the two forward most adjustment screws for the flat headlight cover.

Now, with that done, you lossen the four 10 mm screws that mount the flat cover Move the flat cover in the needed direction, using your hand on the hood to determine when it's level. Slowing tighen the 10 mm screws continually checking for correct alighment with the hood.

Re-install the hood and it's four screws (mine calls for a torx head bit) and align it so that when the headlight are in the up "ON" position, the lowest lip (sorry don't know what GM calls it) of the hood is flush with the hood line.

They may be called bezels (what I referred to as "hood")

Hope this helps.

Jake

Default Try This

I do not know which year you are referring to, but when I did both sides on an 89, I made sure the motor shaft was lined up at re-assembly as when it was dis-assembled. Meaning that I put it back together exactly as it was, alignment wise.
I am not sure if that means anything or not, but I had level doors each time when finished.

I proudly tuned up my 85 c4 and went for a cruise at dusk. When I got to a gas station, the passenger side headlight stayed open. When I got home, I saw that a torx screw was binding on the square cut out on the hood. I tried a few adjustments which did nothing. Probably because I didn't know what I was adjusting. Finally with the lights in the off position, I forcefully moved the head light assembly away from the screw that appeared loose which was binding. The light closed. Now, with the hood open, and both lights facing in, I could see that the passenger side light bezel had a loose screw on the left. I wound up unbolting and removing the inner wheel well to gain good access to these 2 top screws. The one on the left was stripped and will be an easy fix. This was the culprit that caused the binding in the first place because the bezel shifted as the lights opened and caused the torx screw, which was not flush to hit the opening of the hood. (the stripped screw is a phillips just to clarify ). With the lights off, the torx screw that was binding is not visable. The passenger side will not open now, morethanlikely because I turned something that now causes the entire mechanism to bind and make a clunking sound when trying to open. If anyone can follow my jargon and can offer some help, I'd really appreciate it.

Had a similar problem with mine. Turned out that the black gear had broken where it attached to the shaft. My motors were also not very secure in the plastic housing and could shift around a bit causing them to bind.

Wow! Talk about reviving an old thread, lol. Those side screws can back out and bind like you said. A tip DUB, from the paint section, gave me was to put a dab of silicone adhesive on the threads when you put them in. That way they won't back out and damage your hood when you turn your lights on/off.
