Default Head Gasket Installation Question

I will be getting my heads back from Precision Porting any day now. I have a 90 L98 and need to know if anyone uses gasket sealer? The gasket manufacturer says I don't need to use any but I thought I would ask for a second opinion.

Thanks.

Head gaskets get installed dry.

Some people will use the gasket sealer if there is any question about the block or heads being true and flat. Assuming they are then do it dry. Mine weren't "perfect" in the TA but they sealed fine dry.

The only time I use sealer is when the deck is pitted or otherwise compromised such as on some of the ancient diesels that I repair sometimes. It can help with such minor surface imperfections but if trueness is not in spec it could not help with that, I believe. I never use it on anything that I'm allowed to repair properly, it's not necessary.

All above are correct, but don't forget that SBC head bolts have wet feet. Be sure to use a sealer such as Permatex High Temperature Thread Sealent on the threads of the head bolts. I use the same stuff around the intake manifold bolts and it helps prevent the oil misting around tose bolts.
