Got my 96 LT1 in December. She's about ready to turn 60,000 miles. The car is 9+ years old. what should I do about the spark plugs. At 65 I really don't work on cars anymore. I'm bringing the car in for service, oil, filter, etc. Also having them swap out the serpentine belt, mainly because of the years. Is it worth doing the plugs? Thanks.
Vic
Probably so. If there's any way you could talk yourself into doing it yourself, however, you will save money. Expect a shop to charge around $200 to change the spark plugs, or more.
And because of that, go with a long-life plug.
as a do-it-yourself job, the first time for someone who's never done it before, it's about a 4 hour job. Mainly thanks to the #6, #7, #8 spark plugs. #8 being the biggest pain in the rear to get to.
Another option would be maybe a CorvetteForum.com member in your area might help you do it yourself.
Service manual on my '95 states that plugs are a 100k service. I had a miss in my engine so I did the plugs at about 85k. The plugs were like new. The miss was in the coil wire. Wires and belt will fry due to age and heat. Oil gets dirty. Plugs on a '96 should last a long time.
I am a cheap SOB. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
