Default Fluid extractor -- great 'tool'

Although it's not really a "tool", the fluid extractor I bought from Griot's Garage 5-6 years ago has been invaluable to me in the garage. I don't use it to drain the oil when I change it, but it's terrific when servicing my 700R4. Just suck out almost every bit of the tranny fluid, take off the pan and you don't have to deal with a bunch of fluid all over. It also sucks out the gear oil from the rear end, making this job alot easier. There are other ways to use it too, but those are the main ones I use it for.

I've seen the same item for a little less at a local independent parts place, but Griot's sells them for $65 and are very easy to biz with:

Just in case you hadn't come across this thing...

I use one to change the oil in my boat's twin 454's. They work quite well especially if you heat up the oil first. I've also used it to suck out p/s fluid, tranny, etc.

Considering how easy it is to clean up brake fluid, I think this extractor could work just fine with it. I always clean mine out after use with de-natured alcohol, and that would clean out brake fluid very well, so...

To remove brake fluid I use a turkey baster. I reuse mine however, they are under a buck so clean-up doe not have to be an issue.

What else can you use to clean these fluid extractors out with besides denatured alcohol?

Not with pressure, but if you've cleaned it well so that no previous fluid is messing up your current one, it's easy to pour from the extractor to, say, a gallon jug w/a funnel and then into the car from the jug (the extractor is pretty tall and unwieldy).

I've sprayed brake clean into it before if I needed something really strong, but brake clean dries out the rubber gaskets so much that I rarely do that. De-greasers like Simple Green, Orange whatever or any others can do a pretty good job too. I personally like denatured alcohol simply because of how quick it gets the job done and that it dries quicker than water in the main container of the extractor.
