Guys I need some help. I decided to do some do it yourself work and replaced my stock TB and MAF with BBK 52mm and Granatelli MAF. After making the change my idle is now around 1200 rpms. When the car is running-doesn't want to fall back on the idle stop screw, but if you manual push it back against it, it idles normally. I noticed it falls back onto the screw just fine as soon as you turn the car off and the pressure/vacuum is released. I called the tech line at BBK and explained the situation. They didn't think it had anything to do with vacuum related and suggested I place a washer on the outside of the throttle plate to keep it shifting from side to side and becoming stuck. I took off the TB and found it barely moves side to side and doesn't seem to be binding either. Any suggestions????
I had the EXACT same problem with a BBK , and interestingly got the same response.
1. I found that the throttle plates were LOOSE!
So be sure they are tight and not binding on the "venturi"... Some folks have mentioned that they found a small burr near the throttle plate shaft.
2. It could be that the IAC is not reset...
3. You may need to reset the idle screw, theoretically the IAC should reset and bring the idle down even if the idle screw is adjusted up a bit to where the throttle rests on the idle screw.
4. you can or should also check that you have the TB torqued the same perhpas once you have it tightened down onto the intake it coul be binding...
Mo thanks! I 'll give everything a try. Did you have the same response with your car at idle then fine when it was turned off? Almost seems it wouldn't be any different if it was something on the TB.
Strange, I've put on 2 BBK's 58 & 52mm and have had no problem. Make sure you TPS is at .5 volts and make sure all vacume lines are hooked up.Not sure if the 96 has vacume inlet under it or not. My 88 does and it's easy to miss.
Shoot a little starter fluid at the shafts when it's running to see if they are leaking.
Is this a new BBK?
Yeah it was new. It was acting very strange- I didn't know if it possibly had something to do with the TB or the maf since I changed them both at the same time.
Yes, 96,
it was the same it would seem to function and not bind with the engine off but once it was started and you crack the strottle it would not want to return to the stop....
I agree with sniper, as well aside from the "binding " issue you may want to also check the throttle body gasket and besure you don't have any leaks.
Another thought would be add a return spring to the throttle linkage...
I ended up just adjusting the idle screw up a little and let the IAC adjust the idle down... very frustrating. I then went supercharged and it is setting in a box somewhere...
Why did you install a BBK on the car to start with?
Sounds like the AIC is not set right or the gasket on the aic was not installed.
The throttle body gasket can be installed back wards.
Did you reset your ASR cable?
Check the cruise control if it lags when you set it adjust cable.
If the cruise does not set at one speed cable too tight.
The black thing on the cable flips streight out and you slide the cable until you have just a small amount of slack.
Hope this helps.
