D44 or 9" The D44 are so expensive and can never hold the power of a 9" or a Dana 60. You can pick up a 9" or a Dana 60 at a swap meet for alot less$
Your correct the actual rears are cheaper, its the installation into these cars that is where the $$ comes in. You will spend 6k+ do it right and SAFE.
a good major of accidents at the track are caused by rear end components failing at 1/2 track and sending the car out of control. I have pondered the swap as well. But will leave my installation in the hands of Leo at Neverlift who makes his living off 1/2 backing race cars.
On the strip having a failure is back enough, if its a street driven car the consequenses of a failure could be much more devistating.
The real problem isn't the differencial, it's the ind rear suspension. There are just too many things going on, creating weird geometry, binding issues and too many places where things can just break.
In all reality, live axel is the way to go for drag racing. IRS is for road racing.
