I need to do a fluid change in my 87 4+3 and I want to replace the filter. I've seen them in both Mid-America and Ecklers' but are they available from AC-Delco and what is the part number? The AC-Delco website doesn't show that part.
MAD and Ecklers show them for $20 plus around $8 shipping.
The parts guy at my shop says the OD filter can be cleaned and reused. Is that a reasonable thing to do? Does the o-ring have to be replaced every time the filter is removed?
In Canada, the General says he no longer makes these parts. You will have to go aftermarket.
I would not reuse the filter, and yes, I replace the o-ring at each service.

I can't remember which Ford tranny, but if you take the filter with you, have them open a few boxes till you get a match. These are so cheap, that it isn't worth the time and chemicals it takes to clean a dirty one properly.

I cleaned and re-used the filter when I changed my fluid a week ago. I had no choice. The rubber grommet was hard as a rock and would have broken if I had taken it off to put on the other filter and since it was 2 in the am when I did it I didn't think there was a parts house open to get a new one. I used brake parts cleaner on it and it was just as shiny if not shinier then the new one.

This could be interesting!! I work at a auto repair shop and the guy who orders parts suggested cleaning the filter and re-using it. We also order lots of parts from CarQuest and I may be able to match one up from their warehouse.
Do you remember what year or model Ford it was? Front wheel drive? Rear wheel drive? Big car, little car? Anything you may remember would be a big help.
The screen is the same as a Ford FMX. It was used from the mid '60s through the mid to late 70's in various models. It was RWD (of course) and had a cast iron case with a bolt-on bellhousing. The filter material is just a nylon screen and could be cleaned and reused as long as it's not tore. BTW, the pan gasket is NOT the same.

Yes that's the one, the Ford FMX. Although the screens on the ones I bought were identical to the ones that come out of our OD. The pan gaskets not matching up is no biggy since I use RTV instead. NO LEAKS ! it doesn't come with a grommet either, but I buy those from S&K by the dozen.
I did a Google search on Ford FMX Transmissions and I found a Ford transmission discussion page. The FMX looks like it was used behind late 60's to early 70's cars like Mustangs and Cougars with probably the 351W motors.
I managed to find an ad on that page for a guy that does FMX rebuilds and I have sent him an e-mail asking about interchangeability and a request for a pic of that filter. When (and hopefully if) he replies, I'll post a reply here.
