Default Vibration at higher rpm???

Has anyone had a problem with drivetrain vibration? The vibration starts at about 3000rpm and continues until redline. Under 3k it is ok and smooth. I am thinking clutch assembly or mabye u joints. I don't want to guess and just put a clutch in it at $1000. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If it just started with the installation of the new clutch, I think you KNOW the answer.

If it was done by a shop, check the driveshaft carefully also. Maybe they dropped it or dinged it .

I think he means he doesn't want to spend $1000 ON putting a new clutch in on a mere guess.... but I could be wrong.

Now that I reread it you are probably right. Local driveshaft shop will check the balance for small money. If you are lucky it needs u-joints. They come sealed from factory and they dry up after 8-10 years. First time I changed mine, they were nothing but rusty powder when I popped the caps off.

Thanks for the suggestions. U joints sound like a logical first step. The joints are clicking when I back up. Any other input from anyone would be great. Thanks

I've got the exact same problem with my 94. Drove the car for a couple of years vibration free, then the vibration just started out of the blue. Mine comes on around 3200 rpm all the way to redline.

As far as guessing and putting in a clutch, that's what I did. Put in a new flywheel, too. No difference.

The FIRST thing you need to do is determine whether it is in the engine, or in drivetrain. Here's a quick test: With the car sitting in the driveway and the engine running, put the trans in neutral. Leave the clutch pedal pushed in. Now slowly bring the revs up to the point where the vibration occurs. Is it still there? You can also try this with the clutch pedal out, trans in neutral (may get a little more "harshness" because now you're spinning the main shaft in the trans).

Ok, if the vibration is still there after these tests, it's in the engine. To be more specific, it's between the harmonic balancer on the front (and the belt driven accessories), and the flywheel in the back.

If the vibration is only present while the car is actually moving (trans and driveshaft spinning), then the problem could be in the driveshaft or maybe be related to u-joints.

If you determine that the vibe is in the engine, try this. Take the serpentine belt off. Start the car and run the test again sitting still with the trans in neutral. Removing the serpentine belt will eliminate a problem with one of the driven accessories (A/C compressor, alternator, power steering pump). Don't worry about overheating, your waterpump is driven off the cam.

Let us know what you find from these tests!
