Boy, that's a good looking combo!

I think the cam is going to work very well, the 219 is just a bit small in these big inch motors, but 230/230 sounds great. Take a hard look at those gears though, I think they're way too tall for a torque motor that gets some street use and has an A4.

Looks like a good combo. I'd be very interested to see what it runs.

In @ 7 days I can tell you more, but I have the cam in my sig, bolting on a Superram this weekend, to be continued!

I think you cam will be good for your combo. What is your CR?

Sorry here are all of the Cam specs:

.576/.576 w/ 1.6rr,
280/284 @ .006,
233/233 @ .050

Hot Rod has a 383 article where they run the xr294hr, 242/242@.050 and .540/.562 lift with 1.5 rockers. 110LSA.

It pulled 9" of vacuum on the 383. This engine hit the 500HP/500TQ level. That cam in a 406 would be more tame but perhaps not enough. It should give you a range though and provide at least an example of how big you can look to go.

Bigger is not always better, I just thought it might help to have a good reference for the top of your range if your still undecided.

With the cam I selected, I will be getting .597 lift. My springs can take a .600 lift. And with the 230 duration on the 406 I should see peak at about 5500 which is a little lower than it could be...but I don't want to be spinning too close to 6000 rpms with the current bottom end configuration I have. If I had better internals that were internally balanced I'd feel better about getting a higher duration and spinning past 6k...which at that point the super ram would become less effective. Considering shifting would be at about 5750, that's about as big as a duration as I can "safely" get by with. I could maybe go with a 233 duration, but it's pushing it in my opinion.

My friend warned me that this cam I selected might not be a small enough base circle to clear all the internals. But I though it would be weird to have a retro fit cam that wouldn't work in a 400 engine? Also they warned to make sure that the lift in the cam wont make the valves smack the piston. Any easy way to check before buying the cam and wasting a head gasket to test?

That cam is very similar to my solid roller in my engine 236/236 110LSA .587 lift. The 110LSA will not make much vacuum at idle(I have 12in at 900rpm) and will make it harder to tune and a pain to drive daily. I am going to switch to a 244/250 on a 114LSA and .630lift for better vacuum and less cam surge but bigger cam. What year is your car? Also your piston to valve clearence should be ok, but since you had the heads angle milled you probably should check. the only way to check that I know of is to put the cam in, pull the head, use a thin layer of clay on top of the piston at the valve reliefs. put the head back on, adjust the valves on that cylinder, and roll the motor over by hand, remove the head, and measure the thickness of the clay at the thinnest point. Its better to do this when first assembling the engine. It took some work with a tuner and alot of time on the dyno to get my tune just right and I still have a little part throttle cam surge with the 110LSA.

I think a better cam would be one like their new Extreme Fuel injection HR cams like 230/236 .576 .571lift and 113LSA you can have a retrofit cam customground to the same specs as one of these. Just call them.

there is one bigger for the brave...242/248 would make over 440hp to the tires on your engine with the right intake, the Super Ram may hurt you power with the head flow you have. I think a well ported SR max flow is in the upper 270cfm range. But it will make gobs or torque...just for your info...
