How do you take this thing off?? I think its literally welded on there. I really find it hard to push the button and its starting to **** me off. Plus its all ugly, cracked with the leather worn to the bone. Would anyone post pics with instructions? While I'm at it, I'll replace the shift boot also since its in $hitty condition. Can you use an aftermarket shift ****? I have one that a friend gave me a while back for free when she worked at Autozone. It looks about the same in which there is a button on top. Should this fit ok?? Also where can I find a nice shift boot, or better yet, who can sell/donate one to me?
The "button" will pull out.
The **** is held in place by a retainer ring; you may need to shine a flashlight down in there to see it. Yep; you'll need a retainer ring plier to get down there.
Per 89C4's advice, the button will lift out. You may have to use a small blade screwdriver to lever it up a little bit. Ecklers Corvette, in your area, has replacement ***** and buttons. Check their website. They also have new shift boots in various colors.

Reason: add info
For all the specialty tools like retainer ring plyers that you don't want to buy, go to your local AutoZone, they have a loan program, a small refundable deposit is required. Our local store has most everything you will need.
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!!!!!!
Not being a smartie, but it would take more time to send pictures than to pry up the button, look down through the **** and remove the split ring. Remember the "split ring pliers".
