Greetings All: I've got a service ride control light on. I've pulled the codes and found code 34 (right rear out of position). I pulled the shock, removed the actuator, did a visual check, re-assembled and re-installed with no change.
Is my next step to replace the actuator? Is there a method to check the actuator while it is removed from the vehicle? Is there a source for replacement actuators?
You could check the shaft on the shock first to make it turns and is not seized.
Then you can check the actuator. I believe (need to check the book) but on ignition on it should turn first one way and then turn the other to establish position as a strarting point for operation.
A code 34 points to the actuator not stopping as it tries to get to a default setting. This usually means that the gear on the shock rod is broken. Did you check the gear?? The gear should only turn somewhere between 60 and 90 degrees depending on the year of the car (there are two shock varients 89-91 and 92-96)
I just got done with swapping a rear shock. I had a code 33 and the gear was broken. I put another shock on that a friend had given me with a good gear and the code went away.
The actuators are all the same in terms of operation but the wire loom on the rear actuators are much shorter than the front ones. You can swap them side-to-side to see if you get a code 33.
Actuators are very pricey; unless you can find one on eBay or somebody here willing to let one go cheap, expect to pay around a couple hundred for one new.
