Default clicks, clunks from rear?

New to the site, boy am I glad I found you! I have a stock 94 6sp with 107,000. At around 80,000 I began to hear some clicks and clunks from what seemed to be the rearend. So I took it to the dealer (I know ) and they said it needed u-joints. So I had all of them changed. The sounds did not go away and I did not worry. Well the sounds are still there, any ideas what it could be? It runs and drives fine, I am getting concerned so I don't drive too far from home. At 102,000 went to the track 13.3 @105 just hypertech and a tune up. Pretty slick for a stocker. It happens when I let out the clutch every time I take off.

You might have a cracked rear spring. Same thing happened to me a couple years ago.

Each 1/2 shaft has a teflon coated washer that fits between the yoke and the back side of the wheel bearing. This is likely your problem. Either they were left out or the teflon coating wore off. These are often overlooked or forgotten about.

Don't llisten to those guys, I'll tell you what it is. :-)

But you have to answer this question.
Is it a click or a clunk? Big difference.

The typyical thing that so many people change u-joints and it does not fix the noise has to do with more like clicks.
When you take off from a stop, does it click like 1-5 times? Sound kind of like a creaking noise?
With someone listening from the outside, does it sound like its coming from right behind the wheeel?

If so, may simply be rust on the hub/bearing splines. Normally removing the hub, greasing the spline teeth with some anti-sieze and torquing the spindle nut back go specs will take care of it. This is very common on C4's.

BTW, it is not dangerous if that is what it is so don't worry too much about driving it.

On a similar topic, what about a squeak coming from the back of the car. Usually noticable at around 15 to 25 mph.

SHINOBI-X, while you have the rear wheels off check out the U-joints in both half-shafts.

I found one lose U-joint; after I had the two in that half-shaft replaced the clicking was gone.

I drove it for about a week till I brought it back to my mechanic. He put it up on the lift and found the crack in the spring. I was there when he did it so I know it truly was cracked. I don't here of this very often on the forum so I would assume that this a rare occurence. Definitely check on all the things listed above since you have to get under there anyway.

Just as another source of noise from the rear (on an 87 Z-52), I have Bilstein shocks that make a click (on either jounce or rebound - can be heard with normal wheel movement over very small bumps & undulations). Disconnected the shocks (one side at a time), and no click. Shocks function properly and no sign of leaks, and the shock mounting rubber is fine. Noise (click) is internal to the shock, but I can hear it while cruising. Maybe I need a louder exhaust!

Anyone else seen this?

I've got a similar problem also.... where can you get that Teflon washer mentioned??? I know for a fact mine doesn't have it because I just got done doing all u-joints and rear wheel bearing. Mine clicks when first put in to gear and the suspension flexes. And when I give it the gas the first time it clicks. It really sound like its coming from the brakes though...but i've checked everything with them I think. It does click sometimes driving around but most of the time it is just when first put into gear D and Park. The Teflon washers are worth a try...Thanks.

The washers are available at the gm dealer. Not much money if I recall. These are shown in the rear axle pic.

If none of the above works, check the torcque on your suspension. I've seen that cause the ratcheting or cliking noise when you just start up. (Just the first few feet)

92 Corvette is dead on. I had the same problem on my 93. The spindles are different metals than the bearing they ride on, and there is no grease in there. SO, I took off the wheel bearing spindle assembly, then applied some grease, and the noise was gone. Dont go to a dealership, go to a Corvette specialist.

I may not be very helpful with this advice, but here goes...
The C beam that goes from the rear of the transmission to the front of the differential can make noise if it has been removed and re-installed without some type of sealant.
Just my 2 cents.
Good luck, I hope you get it solved.
