Valve spring question, When to change?
Without looking at my log book, I am guessing I have about 200 runs on my motor.
When do you guys change your valve springs?
I would need to do this in the next month or so before I hit the track this spring.
Do you think I could get another season out of it? Or change 'em as a preventitive maintenance thing?
That depends a lot on your set up. If it's a radical cam and you really wind it up, a change may be in order. If it's more of a DD that you race, you're probably OK. When you start seeing valve float or hydraulic lifter pump up, change them. Although they CAN break, the biggest problem with older, over used, valve springs, is that they lose their tension. For a mild or mid performance engine *I* would wait until they show symptoms.
Take one off and test it for pressure. If the pressure is still good don't waste the money. If it's starting to get weak, replace them.
It depends on how much overkill was built in when you put it together. I know that the springs I put on my car are way too strong for me to ever worry about them again. They're capable of near .700 lift and I'm only running about .550
Your best to do what Nathan recommends....test one or two. Or you can buy a tester that clips to the rocker and check them all in the car. As long as they are within the cam specs, you're ok....however, if you're lift is anywhere near the limits of the spring, it might not be a bad idea to change them every couple of years. A broken spring can cause a lot of damage and they aren't that expensive to replace.
THAT changes everything. Cam specs and rpm information might have been helpful, but everything else allows one to pretty well imagine. I concur with the others.
