sniper,

I have found generally when the low coolant light comes on "intermittantly" it has been an air bubble. You might let the car warm up ad idle and see if the water level drops I suspect that when the engine is warming up the water level is dropping.

I'm not positive but I think the sensor is in the block.

Hope this helps,

mo

On an 87, the sensor is in the radiator, located on the pass. side below the radiator cap (single wire/connector going to the sensor), maybe 4" to 6" below the cap.

Have heard of "air bubbles", but only reason mine has tripped, is for actual coolant leak (head gasket failure in my case).

Yeah,
coolant level looks good when running. I just put a goodyear hose kit on it 2 days ago and bleed it. It comes on and then goes off.
Thinking maybe sending unit. Any other thoughts?

The sensor sits in the radiator (right sidetank) under the cap, it has 1 wire connected to it, and all the ones i have seen have been a green wire. Maybe the wire has come off, and as you drive it earths (can't remember which way round it is) or the wire is damaged and same story.

The method I use to bleed it is as follows:

1. With engine cold, remove cap (just let it sit on the radiator opening, without turning it).

2. Have fresh coolant ready to pour in. Start engine, and raise engine RPM to somewhere around 1200 to 1500 (I use a washer or folded paper under the throttle stop). Turn up the heat and turn on the blower as well.

3. Watch the temp guage, and as it approaches the thermostat rating, take off the cap. As soon as the thermostat opens, you will see the water level drop. Top off the radiator with coolant, and replace the cap (tighten it down), and your done.
