Default ZF 6-Speed

Does anyone know what size allen is required for the drain plug on the ZF 6-Speed?

good question! I took both my plugs out with a hammer and chisel / vice grips. make sure you use some kind of anti-sieze on those bad boys when you put them back in because they stick, I don't know if it's the magnesium case or what the problem is.

And get a breaker bar...

remove the fill plug first. It is the tightest. Then worry about the drain. Reason? Why empty it only to find you can't refill?

Also, I suggest getting BMW/Castrol TWS 10-60 motor oil as the fill for the ZF6. Great stuff. Many also suggest Red Line and Amsoil.

Just had to order Redline from the local Advanced Auto because it was not an in stock item. Because of the colder weather here in Ohio, I decided to go with the Redline (a little thinner than Castrol) and not the BMW. At this point I'm not sure which is better but I'll find out. Drain plug is 17mm. I would have never thought about taking out the fill plug first; but this forum clued me in on that. Thanks to all...

describe thinner? 10-60 is pretty thin at cold.

That's the first thing that crossed my mind when I did my trans... I figured with my luck, I'd drain the trans and not be able to fill it...

All you gotta do is roll the car, how hard can that be? People do it unintentionally all the time!

Mike, I don't mean to be an ***, but please use a descriptive title next time.

Instead of ZF6, try "ZF6 Drain plug - help" or something.

Helps people who search for this later on, along with just plain making more sense

If every thread was labeled "C4 question" we wouldn't have very much fun trying to sort through it all would we?
