I have my car in the shop for a variety of things and one of them is the shift cable. 93 automatic. Tech broke one already, we had a spare so I drove it down to them to use. It has taken him so far 1 1/2 days for this one repair. I believe he may be a newbie, but putting that aside since this is CP (customer pay) I'd like to know if anyone knows if there is a trick to putting these in, how long should it really take? I was told they have to now take the cross member out and the entire center console? I am now in another day and am hoping to pick it up today, BUT don't want to be charged hours on end for someones learning curve. Any help is appreciated.
Also, have an icky coolant smell on the inside of my car? It is not over heating or has any other side effects that I am aware of. The A/C does not work right now, but just may need to be charged...
Once they pull the console, the cable is easily accessed. To pull the console takes about 15 minutes if you know what you are doing......about 30 if you have to read it out of the manual.
I hope you are using a GM cable as I have just been through this fiasco.
Last October my original cable broke while I was in Chattanoga, TN. Since I live near Huntsville, AL, I had to get the car going so I had a wrecker lift it and we put in in gear and drove it home.
I replaced the cable at home the next day using a aftermarket cable.
It was not fun as the space to work in is very limited and you have to back out some small (7mm) screws (3 ea), and two of them are hard to get to. onec the screws are out of the flange that seals it to the floor pan it can be pulled out and the new one installed.
The "new" aftermarket cable I installed broke about 3 weeks ago, so I got to do it all again. By the way, the aftermarket cable would never adjust correctly, but once I put the GM cable in it then it worked great.
I can see this taking somebody with little or no experience a long time, and as stated by a post prior to this , there is no crossmember. Hope this helps...
if its not your heater core, check the radiator cap, are you loosing fluid, i was in mine but the leak was a mist spray, could hardly tell because it dried right up. turned out being my radiator , gotta love those plastic radiators, good luck ,,
