Default No cat?

Consider a state where they no longer check emissions...has anyone measured the gain you can make with a gutted cat? Would it make the computer upset on a 1990 L98?

This is an interesting question... on the L98, the exhaust is very restrictive.

If it was me, and could do the ultimate L98 exhaust, I would go with LTs, bullet cats off the collector, x-pipe, then back to mufflers, more then likely, magnaflow.

That would keep the air clean and pick up somewhere north of 60hp.

I am a huge fan of cats... gutting them creates large chambers with no control for the air flow... and lowers back pressure which would effect performance.

If you live in such a state, the above would be seriously kick ***.

with bogus...

There is a lot of power to be had by ditching the entire L98's exhaust...

To answer you're question, I dont know of anyone who dyno'd their car before and after removing the cat. All I can tell you is mine had a noticeable difference.

A "gutted" cat can actually cause a performance loss and some really funky exhaust noises. If you're going to ditch the cat, do it right by removing it and putting a straight pipe in it's place to effectively remove a source of exhaust turbulence. If you want to keep it clean install a high flow cat for your car.

If it's an L98 a set of Hooker 2149 headers with dual bullet cats into a nice 2.5" or better cat-back would flow all you'd ever need and keep the air clean too, it would even retain the provisions for your air pump / etc. 2151's with no cats will give you the absolute best in performance and looks because they don't have AIR provisions. Technically though this setup is illegal.

Gutted cat won't cause problems with L98. It will get louder by a good bit.
