If there wasn't a difference between the 88 shocks and other years the 88's wouldn't have a different part number. Kind of like putting 315's on 9 1/2" wheels- you can do it and MAYBE get away with it.

The 88 suspension was sort of a one-off design when they introduced the zero-scrub suspension; the shock length was slightly different and the shock rate was also slightly different.
Go with the 88-specific shock and you won't have problems.
