Remove the top retaining nut on the outside of the rear fender.
Have someone next to it to catch the antenna when you turn the radio on.
Turn on the radio and have your helper gently pull as it is coming up.
Then feed the new antenna mast in and have your helper turn off the radio and it will suck it in... then reinstall the retaining nut and you are done.
Quick question. How do you remove the antenna mast so that I can replace it? Does it unscrew or what?
Thanks
I just replaced the mast on my 95. I bought a replacement from ebay for $9.95 and this comes with a tool to remove the mast cap (for lack of a better term). Then you can turn the radio on and extract the mast. Hopefully, the entire plastic cable will come out as well. Inserting the new mast is essentially reverse procedure but it helps if one person feeds the new mast cable while the other person turns the radio off. You may have to go through this a couple of times for the antenna to fully seat.
On an 85 you have to disassemble the antenna motor and replace the mast that way. Apparently on these cars the little ball unscrews from the top of the mast and it removes from the inside.
how do you get the rubber cap off, does it come out??
You do not need to remove the grommet to replace the mast or even the whole antenna assembly. Remove the nut and the mast will come out. The nut has two flat sides and is best removed with a tool that is supplied with some replacement masts.

My plastic/nylon geared cord broke inside the ant. I had to remove the whole darn thing and I just replaced everything, but I'm into overkill.
The very same thing happened with my 92. I had to pull the unit out to remove the broken plastic cord. I now have it as a spare as I replaced the entire unit due to age.
