4L60E Rebuild Cost?
I'm sure a few people have had theirs rebuilt. How much did you pay? I am getting quotes all over the board - from as little as $500 "if no hard parts are needed" ??? to $2300 (that's if I bring it in!!). I have the tranny out, it has 123,000+ on it and OD slips every now and then and the fluid has that nasty burnt smell to it. I thought I would have it gone through while I am building the new motor.
I know the $2300 place is on crack but I'm just curious to see what others have paid and maybe I can negotiate with some of these places. I saw I can pick up a Pro-Built for $1,695

I took mine in to some guy that has a shop out in the country. It cost me $1700, most of it being parts. He made it as strong as he could. New bigger and better parts everywhere. That was with a new torque converter as well, be careful with the converter though, he got me the wrong one and it blew up in a matter of a week. Took the new tranny out with it, he got my old converter back and fixed me up for $500.

RACE ON!!!
I paid $800.00 for a 4L60E built pretty much the same way as that pro-built you reference. Technically I should have paid $1200.00, but the guy made an error in quoting me the right price and honored the $800.00 price.
There are guys out there that are good trans mechanics and build them out of their garages for this kind of money. I started asking around and found one thru a freind of a friend of a freind.
For anyone else reading: Before your swap, make note of what RPM's the tach shows for a given MPH (for example 65 mph) and in what gear. For comparison afterwards.

Most complete rebuilds use approx $300 or less in soft parts. Hard parts add to the price. Sometimes substantually. When they die a peaceful death like you describe, minimal or no hard parts are damaged. Sometimes the brass reaction carrier bushing actually wears out the carrier. This should be the other way around. This part is around $70 or so new. I do them out of my garage and often charge friends $250-$350 in labor + actual parts. Shift kits and upgrades are extra, of course. I try to blueprint the units well and this makes them live a bit longer. Most trans shops in my area get $1000 or more for a stock rebuild if you carry the unit in to them.
I 3 years ago paid 3100, 1000 was for R&R... I was told it was beefed up to handle 450 horse... Well I added my supercharger, hitting 522 hp, it bit the big one took out 2-4 gear. I sent it off to had a "pro" build it he is quoting 3000 .
i sent it off Fed Ex broke it in 5 pieces... SO I guessFed Ex get's to pay for this rebuild... including breaking the input on the torque convertor. The damages alone came up to 1640 dollars...
THe "pro" pulled what was left apart to find they did NOTHING to beef the transmission . I trust this "pro" guy, he was refered by a close friend... no wonder it only lasted aout 30,000 miles HEH.
So yes you will get prices all over the map... Like posted above, get references....
Good luck,
Mo

I have had 5 trannies replaced in mine. I am just hard on my toys, I guess. GM replacement units cost $1500 several years ago. After my engine upgrade my stock tranny lasted a month. I then spent close to $3000 including a pro-torque convertor, installed and towed. Take a look at the Raptor and the "www.Levelten.com" bullet proof trannies for comparison. Look at the upgraded hard parts they list. I usually loose the 3-4 clutch pack in the stock configuration. Better use the kevlar paltes! The pump needs an upgrade too. I am happy with my latest Levelten tranny, as it has lasted 3 years now of full throttle blasts and drag radials and increased rear gears. Buy the expensive upgraded one or buy one that has a 3 year warranty (AAMCO etc) and plan on selling car or replacing the tranny every few years.

DRM did mine for $2750.00 two years ago. That included remove and replace along with heavy duty clutches and other parts to handle the xtra HP I have. That price included a 1 year warrantee. Everything's been working great so far.

I asked around and to have it rebuilt was close to the same price.
