I'm looking to buy an Optima battery - went on their website and plugged in the proper info for my '92 - they say there is no match for my vehicle - tried it for ZR1 also - that one is N/A too!
I'm SURE that there are other Forum members who have put Optimas under their hoods - anybody care to give me some info as to which model ID of Optima will fit?
Also, any hold-down issues that might crop up - can I still use the stock battery hold-down?
Thanks guys! You would NOT imagine the ribbing I got from my wife all last fall when my supposedly "good" Delco wouldn't hold a charge, right when she wanted to go for a drive and I had the hood up and had put a charger on it before we could go. Something about reliability of Vettes vs. Hondas or some such $hit!
They don't list a battery for C4 Corvettes because of possible interference between the top (+) post (which C4s do not use-we use the side terminals) and a support for the ECM. Since that support is grounded, you don't want it to touch the top positive post. However, that's not really a problem, and you are correct that many C4 owners have installed Optima batteries.
I have a red top in my '92, and it fits fine and has worked perfectly for two years. I don't remember the fitment code (seems like 35 or 75 rings a bell) but it was just the standard Optima red top. I bought it at Costco for $100. You do NOT need the spacer that comes on the bottom of the battery.
To avoid possible interference between the top + post and that support, you need to move the battery outboard as far as possible. If you look at the black plastic battery tray there are two small tabs on the outboard side. They're only about a 1/4" wide, but you need to trim them off. That gave me enough clearance, but some people also trim the top post of the battery. I wouldn't recommend that because it changes the amount of metal in the battery, but it works for some people. I simply left the insulator on the top post and wrapped some electical tape around it. Putting a short length of heater hose over the top post to act as an insulator is an excellent idea. Whatever you do, just make sure there's clearance between the post and that support.
The stock hold-down works with the Optima just as it does with any other battery.
They don't list a battery because they don't fit the tray properly. It will fit after you trim two little tabs off the tray and the stock hold down will work.
I just purchased a OPTIMA battery from Battery-Web.com total with shipping $116.00 it came in 4 days. Model #75/35-925 has top and side posts for c4 it fits perfect but you will need to trim the tabs, you can then use stock hold down.
