Default SyS and Security lights flash

For some reason, once my 93 LT1 warms up, the SYS and Security lights flash intermittently and the instant mileage reads 99. The car has about 37K miles on it and everything else seems fine.

The dealer is currently fixing the problem at their expense (I just bought te car), but I am wondering if anyone knows what would cause this.

It is not some unique problem since the owner's manual references this and says to get the vehicle serviced. I ordered the FSM but I cannot find any reference to this.

Anybody have an experience like this?

Thanks

On my '93 it turned out to be a heat sensitive ECM. Used a heat gun to reproduce the symptoms in the garage. Heated the cool ECM with a heat gun, ignition on, engine off and after a minute the lights came on. My service manual discusses this symptom in the CCM section.

did you have an aftermarket stereo installed? This will also give the same symptoms... there are too data wires that connect to the car stereo if they replaced it , then this would happen.

I'm on a roadd trip but there are two 1K resistors you can put on thdata lines to take care of it.

PM me or email me if this is the case I'll be happey to give you the information...

I suspect that this is what it is as I have not replaced the factory stereo. I bought the factory service manuals but I have been unable to locate the section where it tlks about this.

The problem I have at this point is that the dealer assured me that they would repair the problem so I closed on the vehicle. Now they tell me that "the original owner had a problem with the VATS system (whatever that is) and had a chip installed that is creating this issue but there is no going back. It isn't really hurting anything so don't worry about it."

I am not accepting this - if it is an unfixable problem, it is going to be their unfixable problem.

Is the ECM so expensive that they would try to avoid replacing it?

The strange thing is that the dealer says it is normal yet it only occurs when the car warms up. I think the dealer is wrong. As for no going back, if the chip is in the ECM, it can be reolaced with OEM. ECM cost me $180 at the dealer so his cost is well below that. If there is a problem with the VATS the dealer should have fixed it prior to sale since this is part of the theift protection system. Nothing adds up.
