Default 4+3 questions

My transmission has been acting funny since I got it 9 months ago. It is an 85 with the 4+3 tranny.

I am trying to diagnose the problem with it and don't know what conditions trigger what. I changed the fluid in it about a month ago. When I push the button most of the times the car works correctly, the light turns on and the car shifts into overdrive. Sometimes when I push the button the light comes on but the car will not shift into overdrive or it will shift in and out. Sometimes after it goes into overdrive and I am driving at a steady pace the car will shift in and out of overdrive. When this is happening the overdrive light stays lit and doesn't go out. If the car is in overdrive and I floor it the car shifts to direct drive and the light turns off. Not sure if this is a fluid, relay/connector or some other problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Mine is an "88 and it works differently than yours.
Check out this link to see how yours is supposed to work compared to how it works...

Sounds like an electrical problem, start by checking the wireing and connections especially at the OD relay on the firewall.

Check your fluid level. The filter or pickup may also be dislodged and the pump is sucking air on occasion. This is one condition where the o/d light will be on without it actually being in o/d.

The other is if the wire from the o/d relay to the unit is shorting or coming loose. I had problems with the stupid plastic plug shrinking from heat and coming undone. After the 2nd time I ziptied and taped the damn thing on there.

The unit is supposed to downshift automatically when you punch it in 4th gear. The later years also downshift in 2nd and 3rd.

My 4+3 acted like that from time to time. It was usually the 1st and 2nd gear position switch connection that had become fouled with oil from a slight oil leak through the connector. I would remove the connector and clean it and then it function properly for several months until it became fouled again. I have since swapped to the ZF6 and no longer need to worry about this.
