Default Bolt Size and Thread

Hi everybody!
Does anyone know off the cuff, what size bolts as in length, diameter and thread is needed to attach an LT1 to an engine stand?
I bought a new stand and have a used (67,000 miles), 94 LT1 engine on the here way here that I want to put on the stand and do some work to before I swap it in my 94 vette.
I got some Crane Gold Race 1.6 roller rockers to go in it, I think I have found an Lt4 hotcam here local, and I may pull the heads and have them ported. Would also like some long tubes to go on it, will probably have to wait until I give the IRS all of my money though.
Thanks in advance...

3/8th diameter and 18 thread comes to mind. Try screwing one into the block to check.

Length depends on the stand itself.

Use a straw or piece of wire; stick it in one of the block mounting holes measure to see how much depth you have to work with and subtract 1/8"-1/4" from that.

Now you need to stick a straw or wire through the stand's mounting extensions and see how long they are. Add the two measurements together and you've got it.

If you already have a set of bolts that are too long, just put flat washers on the head side of the bolts before you slide them into the stand's mounting extensions to take up the clearance.

You'll want the stand's mounting extensions to be flush with the block when they are all tightened.

I've done it this way lots of times when I "mis-placed" the stand's mounting bolts. Works for me and is pretty cheap to do.

Jake's right on, they're 3/8ths coarse......I can't remember the thread count. As far as length is concerned, different stands vary on design, so his instructions are best to determine your needs. The only other thing is you might consider the use of some fender washers under the bolt heads to spread the clamping force. Take a look at my pics on the left......they'll show a couple different styles of engine stands. The one I have at home is the el-cheapo one titled "420 on the stand". I felt it best to use washers against the block as well, whereas the "good" stand in some of the other pics has a much stronger and beefier extension.

Give that man a cigar. LOL

I found that out myself last night and meant to come up and edit my post to change the 18 to 16. You beat me to it though, Congrats.

Is the same true for an '89's L98? My engine stand has a 2" length, so what would you estimate the total should be? (I'd much rather buy them today, since the engine will be pulled in the next day or so and I want to bolt the eng. to the stand right away -- get the hoist back to the rental place asap)

They're 3/8" coarse too.

To get the length, just stick something into one of the holes in the backof the block to see how deep it is - like a pencil, straightened coat hangar or phillips screwdriver, etc. I'd guess the depth is something like 1" to 1-1/2" or so

Then measure the length of the engine stand 'stand-offs'. Add the two measurements together.

That'll give you a pretty close idea. If the bolts you have turn out to be too long, a few flat washers at the head will solve that.
