Default Service Engine Soon light - ?

Maybe its coincidence - what you think?

We just put the car back together after having replaced the intake gaskets. everything runs great. Had to make an adjustment to the TV Cable, but thats ok now too. Went to get the oil changed yesterday afternoon - still all ok.

After work yesterday I start the car and the Service Engine Soon light comes on and stays on.

car is an '88, auto, and just hit 59,600 miles (almost exactly at the time the light came on).

Is the light simply due to the mileage - ie gettig close to 60K, or is it possible that the oil change guys bumped something (although I'd think it would have come on right away then).

Since I'm pretty new to this, and I'm trying to work on my own car rather than going to a shop - what should I do now to either clear the light or find out why its on?

Thanks

damn - good question. I don't think so now that you mention it. Seems to me that we loosened it to relieve pressure on the fuel line and I don't recall tightening it.

Could that really casue that light to come on?

The car is at home today so I'll have to check when I get home. Assuming that its not, will the light go out by itself then?

Thanks

The light comes on when the ECM "sees" a reading from a sensor that is outside the parameters for that sensor. It could be a defective sensor or more likely some malfunction that caused the sensor to send a reading the ECM doesn't like.

Since you are new to this and plan on to work in the car, you are going to NEED a Factory Service Manual. The manual will explain the different sensors, how the system each sensor monitors works, and how to trouble shoot each system and test the components to minimize the expensive replacement of good parts. When the light comes on, a "code" is set to indicate the source of the "bad" reading. The manual will tell you how to extract that code from the ECM and send you on a path for correcting the problem. The FSM is printed by Helm Inc. They cover only a single year Corvette. You can sometimes find them for sale in the forum "Parts for Sale/Wanted" section or on ebay. To order a new manual, direct, go to www.helminc.com The other tool you will need is a digital volt ohm meter (DVOM). Have fun.

I don't believe it can on an '88. Whether the light goes off or not, you need to KNOW why it came on. Even if the light goes off, the code will remain set, until you clear it. Still on, or off, you need to determine the code and cure the cause.
